Gregor’s Room ~ Shawna Huskey
Gregor’s Room by Shawna Huskey
Fall Semester 3D Materials and Concepts 2021
WIP
This story was a strange one to read. I saw it as a sad story where the main character, Gregor, was helpless and couldn’t do anything about his situation and felt bad for not being able to help his family. The family dynamics towards the main character were harsh and upsetting. From these emotions, I created a room reflecting decay and disgust the the family felt for the main character. The bed is even a cockroach lying on his back (calling back to how the readers start the story). I did this to reflect on that helplessness feeling he had, not being able to do anything to help his situation. His blanket and pillow are stained and lay on top of the bed to represent how the family tried to cover up his existence. On the floor of the room there is a gross green rug and a rotting apple. Theses objects also represent the Gregor in reference to a scene where the father throws apples and him and one gets lodged in his back and stays there the rest of the story. It is tucked under the bed to show it is ooze coming out of his back. Finally the blue trunk and green table to the only non-worn furniture in the room. I saw this as a way of his family trying to reconstruct their lives around the Gregor. Hoping to again mask the presence of the him.
